If you love a good book, especially one about our corner of Texas, mark Tuesday, Nov. 10, on your calendar. And if you want to go, buy your ticket now.
Literary Lubbock, Texas Tech University Press’ annual fundraising dinner, is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion on the Texas Tech campus. The deadline for individual tickets is Tuesday, Nov. 3, according to the press release published by KCBD.
What to expect
The evening includes a reception, a seated dinner, book sales and short presentations by the authors of this year’s featured books, according to the release. Authors will personalize books for guests, and Andy Wilkison is the emcee.
The press has held the event since 2003. Proceeds support the Grover E. Murray Studies in the American Southwest, a book series named for a former Texas Tech president.
This year’s featured books
- Down in the Dirt: Graphic Art by Terry Allen, 1970–2025 by Peter S. Briggs, a look at more than 50 years of artist Terry Allen’s printmaking and graphic work. (The release published by KCBD spelled his name “Griggs”; the press’s catalog page and ticket page use Briggs.)
- Hill Country Ball: Depression-Era Baseball in the Texas German Belt by Richard W. Butler Jr. (the press also lists Jeremy Affeldt).
- Lone Star Séance: A History of Texas Spiritualism by John B. Buescher.
- Pigs, Pets, and Public Health: One Veterinarian’s Journey by Dr. Ronald D. Warner. Warner was part of the core group that helped make the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine a reality.
- The Story the Bones Tell: A History of the Lubbock Lake Landmark by Sally Logue Post (the press also lists Eileen Johnson).
Who’s behind it
The press describes Literary Lubbock as a showcase for its recent and notable books and a must-attend night for anyone who supports the region’s literary culture. A steering committee chaired by Gretchen Scott plans the evening, and this year’s committee includes Sally Post, one of the featured authors. Last year’s sponsors listed on the press website ranged from Texas Tech colleges and the Museum of Texas Tech University to the National Ranching Heritage Center and local families.
Two of the five have strong local ties: the history of the Lubbock Lake Landmark, and the memoir of a veterinarian who helped bring a vet school to Texas Tech.
