Where’s Adalyn now? What we know about the Clovis girl who wished to hear from Ella Langley

Back in early September, a lot of us in Lubbock met Adalyn Garcia for the first time. She’s the 4-year-old from Clovis, N.M., who has been fighting leukemia at Covenant Children’s Hospital, and she had one big wish: to hear from her favorite singer, Ella Langley.

KLBK reporter Julia Roberts first told Adalyn’s story on EverythingLubbock.com on Sept. 1, and it spread from there. Langley has come and gone from the Hub City since then, so we went looking for an update. Here’s what we know, and what we don’t.

How to help Adalyn’s family
Adalyn’s grandmother set up a GoFundMe to help with lodging and travel while the family stays in Lubbock for Adalyn’s treatment, so they can stay right by her side.
As of Saturday: $100 raised of a $2,200 goal. Every gift helps, big or small.

Give to Adalyn’s GoFundMe

A song that reached her

According to KLBK/EverythingLubbock’s report, Adalyn was diagnosed in May. She later became very sick, was flown to Covenant Children’s, was admitted July 27 and spent time in pediatric intensive care. Her grandmother, Delia Griego, told the station that during that scary stretch she played Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” and Adalyn briefly opened her eyes.

By the time that story ran, Griego said Adalyn was doing much better. Her message to other families facing childhood cancer, as reported by KLBK/EverythingLubbock, was simple: “There’s always hope out there.”

The family’s wish was modest. They hoped Langley might stop by the hospital, or even send a short video, so Adalyn could hear her voice and some encouragement.

Did Adalyn meet Ella Langley?

We couldn’t confirm whether Adalyn met Langley or heard from her.

Langley played United Supermarkets Arena on Saturday, Oct. 10, one night after her Tulsa show was canceled over a bomb threat. Coverage of the Lubbock show focused on what she told the crowd about that decision. We found no public report, post or fundraiser update saying Langley visited Covenant Children’s, sent Adalyn a video or dedicated a song to her. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Some of the kindest moments never make the news, and families don’t always share them.

Hub City UnCovered has reached out to Ronald McDonald House Southwest, Covenant Health and Langley’s representatives and will update this story with any response. If you’re Adalyn’s family, we’d love to hear how she’s doing.

Still in Lubbock, still fighting

Adalyn’s grandmother started a GoFundMe, “For Our Precious Adalyn,” on Sept. 1. She wrote there that the family expected to stay in Lubbock through September and October for Adalyn’s chemotherapy and appointments, and that she had stepped away from her job to be by Adalyn’s side. The fundraiser is meant to help with lodging, travel and everyday costs while they’re away from home.

As of Saturday, the GoFundMe showed $100 raised from one donation toward a $2,200 goal, with no updates posted.

How Lubbock can help

Clovis is about 100 miles down the road, but for months now, Lubbock has been this family’s second home. If you’d like to help Adalyn’s wish along, here are a few simple ways:

  • Give, if you can. Even a small gift to the family’s GoFundMe helps cover a night’s lodging or a tank of gas.
  • Share her story. Langley’s official accounts are on Instagram and TikTok. A kind, respectful share there could still help a short video reach a little girl who loves “Choosin’ Texas.”
  • Support the families staying near the hospital. Ronald McDonald House Southwest gives families a home away from home while their children receive care in Lubbock.

Adalyn’s story first reached West Texas because KLBK/EverythingLubbock told it. We’re grateful for their reporting, and we’ll keep you posted on how she’s doing.
