The South Plains Food Bank hands out more than 400 boxes of food every day, and a lot of that work runs on volunteers. Last year volunteers logged 55,000 hours there, volunteer coordinator Kris Perez told KCBD, adding that “just a couple of hours a month makes a big difference.” With the holidays coming, here’s how to get involved.

What volunteers do
Most shifts are warehouse work: sorting, packing and getting food ready to go out. There are also food distributions and seasonal projects. The food your shift moves feeds into the food bank’s programs, including children’s feeding programs, the mobile pantry, the senior box program, its farm and orchard, and nutrition and wellness work.
Tips
- Book early for November and December. If a shift doesn’t show up on the calendar, it’s already full or the warehouse is closed for a holiday.
- Coming with coworkers, a church group or a team? Groups can sign up for group projects together.
- Slots can change during the day, so check your confirmation before you head over.
