If you’re looking for a free Friday night downtown, Texas Tech’s School of Music is packing Buddy Holly Hall with everything from mariachi to steel drums.

IGNITE! — now in its fifth year — stages a fast-paced showcase of School of Music ensembles on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, at 8 p.m. in the Helen DeVitt Jones Theater at Buddy Holly Hall. The performance is free and open to the public, according to the School of Music.

What’s on stage

The lineup includes the Symphonic Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Choir, Mariachi Los Matadores, Steel Drum Bands, Jazz Bands and more, the school says. The page describes the night as a quick-moving sample of the ensembles housed in the School of Music — the kind of program meant to show neighbors what Tech musicians are working on right now.

Last year, a matinee drew nearly 2,000 middle and high school students, and the evening concert topped 1,000 audience members, according to the School of Music. Those are last year’s numbers, not a promise for tonight, but they show how big the free evening crowd can get.

Gala before the show

Before the free concert, an IGNITE! Gala runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Grand Hall A & B at Buddy Holly Hall. Tickets are required for the gala. The School of Music page does not list a ticket price or link in the text we reviewed, so call or email the school if you want gala seats.

Building a full weekend? Our things to do this weekend guide covers Nov. 6–8. IGNITE! is the School of Music’s big free night in that mix.

If you are already downtown earlier, Lubbock Animal Services lists free adoptions tonight during First Friday Art Trail from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at 511 Ave. K on the city events calendar. That is a separate stop from Buddy Holly Hall, but it is another free Friday option before the 8 p.m. curtain.
