Every weekday around 11 a.m., volunteers in Lubbock and Wolfforth pick up hot meals and drive them to neighbors who are homebound, elderly or disabled. Lubbock Meals on Wheels has done this since 1971, and as of this spring it was serving more than 1,100 people a day across 80 routes. It needs more drivers to keep up.

Quick answer

You can drive a Lubbock Meals on Wheels route on weekdays between about 10:45 a.m. and noon. Most routes take an hour and have 10 to 16 stops, and you don’t have to commit to a regular schedule. Apply at lubbockmealsonwheels.org/volunteer or call 806-792-7971.

Know before you go

  • When: weekdays, with meal pickup between 10:45 and 11:15 a.m.

  • Commitment: take a regular route or sign up as a substitute when you can
  • Before you start: a background check and a one-hour orientation

Why drivers matter

In 2025, about 1,800 volunteers helped Lubbock Meals on Wheels deliver more than 400,000 meals. The nonprofit added three routes this May, which means more people to reach and more seats to fill behind the wheel. It doesn’t take government money and isn’t a United Way agency, so volunteers and donors carry it.

Not sure it’s for you? You can ask to do a ride-along with an experienced driver before you take a route on your own.

Not a driver? There’s still work

  • Help in the kitchen with hot meals and breakfast
  • Wash coolers, carry out meals or pack weekend sacks
  • Office and administrative help
  • Drive clients’ pets to vet appointments
  • Bring your church, civic group or company to cover a whole route. More than 40 local businesses already send employees out on lunch-hour routes
