Plenty of people drive past Lubbock Lake Landmark every day without knowing it’s there. That’s a shame, because this 336-acre preserve holds one of the longest records of human life on the Southern High Plains, almost 12,000 years of it, and it’s free to visit.

Quick answer

Lubbock Lake Landmark is a free 336-acre archaeological preserve at 2401 Landmark Drive with almost 12,000 years of human history. It’s open Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., and closed Mondays.

Know before you go

  • Where: 2401 Landmark Drive, just north of North Loop 289 and Clovis Highway
  • Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 1 to 5 p.m., closed Mondays
  • Good for: history buffs, families, walkers and anyone who wants a quiet hour outdoors
  • Cost: Free, including parking

What it’s like

Start at the Robert A. Nash Interpretive Center, where exhibits explain what researchers have found in the old Yellowhouse Draw. Then head out on the trails, which wind through native grassland with wide-open West Texas sky overhead. It’s quiet out there, and that’s a big part of the appeal.

This is also a working research site. Texas Tech has been doing field research and public programs here continuously for more than 50 years. The Landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places and is both a National Historic Landmark and a State Archeological Landmark.

Tips

  • Park in the north visitor lot and check in at the interpretive center first.
  • Bring water and a hat. There is little shade on the trails.
  • Trail conditions vary. The interpretive center is fully wheelchair accessible.
