Happy Halloween, Lubbock. If you stepped outside early this morning, you probably met fog and a little drizzle. That’s the tail end of a very wet week, and the National Weather Service expects the drizzle and fog to wrap up by early afternoon, well before trick-or-treating tonight.
Here’s what to expect for Halloween, the time change early Sunday and a windy Monday, plus your Election Day forecast and voting reminders.
Halloween Saturday: Foggy start, dry and mild night
The weather service forecast for Lubbock calls for occasional drizzle and patchy fog before 1 p.m., then mostly cloudy skies with a high near 65. Winds stay light, out of the south at 5 mph or less.
Tonight looks dry and partly cloudy, with a light south wind around 5 mph and a low near 57. NWS Lubbock said Saturday morning that plenty of cloud cover will stick around today and tonight, but rain chances are low and most of the area should stay dry. Forecasters also expect low clouds to build back in overnight, so a light jacket over the costume is a good idea for late stops.
Sunset is at 6:56 p.m., according to the weather service. If you’re driving tonight, slow down in neighborhoods and watch for little ones crossing between parked cars.
Friday’s rain set a record
The Flood Watch ended early. NWS Lubbock canceled it late Friday morning, saying rain rates had stayed light, with most places measuring 0.05 to 0.10 inch an hour. The rain still added up, though. The Lubbock airport recorded 0.90 inch on Friday. That’s a record for Oct. 30, beating the old mark of 0.74 inch set in 1941, according to the weather service’s daily climate report and a record event report it issued early Saturday.
That brings October’s total at the airport to 3.48 inches. Normal for this point in the month is 1.49 inches.
Sunday: Fall back an hour at 2 a.m.
Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. Clocks fall back to 1 a.m. Central Standard Time, so you get an extra hour of sleep. Phones and most connected devices update on their own, but oven clocks, car dashboards and older alarm clocks may need a hand.
Sunday’s sunrise comes at 7:06 a.m., and sunset moves to 5:55 p.m., according to the weather service. That means darker drives home from work starting Monday. It’s also a good weekend to test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Sunday itself looks cloudy, with a high near 70 and a south wind of 5 to 15 mph. Sunday night stays cloudy and mild, with a low near 64. South winds pick up to 10 to 15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. In their Saturday morning forecast discussion, forecasters also flagged a brief chance of showers and thunderstorms late Sunday into early Monday, and said some could be strong.
Monday: The windiest day of the stretch
Hang on to your hats on Monday. The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high near 75. Southwest winds will blow 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Monday night turns mostly clear with a low near 51, and west-northwest winds around 15 mph could still gust to 35 mph. Secure trash bins and any leftover Halloween decorations before then.
Behind that system, the weather service expects a weak cold front. It says the front could knock highs down only into the 60s.
Election Day Tuesday: Sunny and a bit cooler
The Election Day forecast is sunny, with a high near 66. North-northwest winds of 5 to 15 mph could gust as high as 25 mph. That’s breezy, but much calmer than Monday. Tuesday night should be mostly clear, with a low near 46.
