Forecast as of 7 a.m. CT Tuesday, Oct. 27, from the National Weather Service in Lubbock. We’ll update this if the outlook changes.

Halloween weekend in Lubbock has a little bit of everything this year: costumes, a parade, a top-25 football game and a good soaking along the way. Here’s the latest forecast and how it lines up with the weekend’s biggest plans.

The forecast: wet Thursday night and Friday

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, the week starts warm. Wednesday looks cloudy through midmorning, then gradually clearing, with a high near 78.

Things change Thursday. There’s a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., with a high near 74. Thursday night rain chances jump to 90%, with showers and possibly a thunderstorm, and some storms could produce heavy rainfall. The low will be around 57. Friday carries an 80% chance of rain, with showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 p.m., then a chance of showers, and a cooler high near 68. Friday night is forecast to be mostly cloudy, with a low around 53.

In its latest forecast discussion, issued at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, the weather service said moisture tied to Tropical Storm Vance will stream into the region, and that heavy rain is “certainly in the cards” from Thursday night into Friday morning. Forecasters also noted that computer models are keen to sweep that moisture out on Saturday.

Halloween Saturday now looks partly sunny with a high near 74, and Saturday night is forecast to be partly cloudy with a low around 57. That’s good news for trick-or-treaters. Sunday has a 20% chance of showers with a high near 75, rising to 30% Sunday night, and forecasters are watching a cold front early next week.

Friday trunk-or-treats: have a backup plan

Friday is the trickiest day of the weekend. Forecasters expect the heaviest rain Thursday night into Friday morning, with a chance of showers continuing Friday afternoon. A lot of churches, schools and businesses are hosting trunk-or-treats Friday night, and some may move indoors, shift times or cancel. Before you load up the kids, check the organizer’s Facebook page or website. Our full trunk-or-treat list has events by date, including plenty on Saturday.

If heavy rain develops, the weather service’s usual advice applies: never drive through flooded streets or low-water crossings. Lubbock’s playa lakes and low spots can fill up fast.

Saturday: parade at 10, kickoff at 11

Saturday morning is packed. The Haunted Hollow on Broadway parade steps off at 10 a.m. You’ll find details in our Halloween week guide.

An hour later, No. 13 Texas Tech (6-1) hosts No. 22 Arizona (6-1) at 11 a.m. at Galaxy Stadium, with the game on ESPN, according to Texas Tech Athletics. The Red Raiders have won 12 straight at home. One more would tie the school record of 13, set from 1939 to 1942. It’s Arizona’s first trip to Lubbock since 1989.

Tech says only limited tickets remain, and its previous four home games sold out in advance. Tickets are digital and available through the Texas Tech ticket office at 806-742-TECH.

With a morning parade and a late-morning kickoff, expect heavy traffic around campus and downtown on Saturday morning. Give yourself extra time, and plan for wet parking lots and grass after Friday’s rain.
