Fall on the South Plains means pumpkins, hayrides and getting gloriously lost in a cornfield. Most patches close on Oct. 31, so this week and next are your last good shot. Here’s where to go.

Quick answer

The main corn maze near Lubbock is At’l Do Farms, open through Nov. 7. Old MacDonald’s Pumpkin Patch runs through Nov. 15 ($8 admission), and most church pumpkin patches in town close Oct. 31.

1. At’l Do Farms Corn Maize

Lubbock’s big corn maze has a new design every year. This year’s theme is America 250. Admission also covers the Fairy Tale Trail, hayrides out to the pumpkin patch, a barnyard and illuminated pumpkins after dark. Horse rides cost extra and are cash only.

When: Through Saturday, Nov. 7, and open on Halloween. Tuesday to Friday 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 2 to 9 p.m., closed Mondays. Where: 6323 FM 1294. Cost: Check atldofarms.com for current ticket prices. Weeknights have usually been cheaper, kids 4 and under get in free, and buying online saves a little on busy weekends. Pumpkins have been 50 cents a pound. Dogs aren’t allowed.

2. Old MacDonald’s Pumpkin Patch

A farm-style patch with animals and rides as well as pumpkins, and the latest-running patch on this list.

3. The Pickin’ Patch

A church-run patch in south Lubbock that’s easy to fit into a weekend errand run.

When: Through Oct. 31. Friday 3 to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 3 to 7 p.m. Where: The Springs Fellowship Church, 6109 114th St.

4. First Cumberland Presbyterian Church Pumpkin Patch

A classic church pumpkin patch with plenty of photo spots, and the money raised supports the congregation’s work.

When: Through Oct. 31. Weekdays 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday noon to 7 p.m. Where: 7702 Indiana Ave.

5. Worth the drive: Floydada

Floydada calls itself the Pumpkin Capital of the USA, and it’s about an hour northeast of Lubbock. Assiter Punkin Ranch, at 3451 Ralls Highway, is open through Oct. 31, Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.

Tips

  • Wear closed-toe shoes. Patches and mazes can be dusty or muddy.
  • Bring cash for extras like horse rides and concessions.
  • Evenings get chilly fast this time of year, so pack a jacket for after sunset.
